Obituary for Larry Popponopolis

April 26, 1947 - January 1, 2001

Larry Popponopolis, 53, passed away on Monday after a workplace injury. Larry was born to parents Leonard and Sandra Popponopolis, and was the brother of Clinton and Chloe, in Dorchester, Massachusetts.

After graduating from George Washington Central High School, Larry joined the U.S. Army as a Combat Engineer. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam and received a Purple Heart for a leg injury sustained while saving the life of a fellow soldier.

Upon returning to the United States, Larry became an active member of the local Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter in Boston, Massachusetts. He also dedicated his time to volunteering at various local soup kitchens and homeless shelters.

In 1969, Larry married Brenda Kettering. They had two sons, James "Jimmy" and Brian "Dink," and adopted one daughter, Chloe.

In 1987, Larry began working for the Star Island Historical Society as both a security guard and a museum curator. He was also an usher at his local church.

Services will be held on Wednesday, January 3, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Lower Island District Funeral Home. Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of such a distinguished individual.

The DAV Chapter will provide Military Funeral Rites, including a 21-Gun Salute, at the cemetery.
